Earplugs for concentration
Studying in a full library, working from home next to a renovation, reading on the train. People talking around you are the biggest distraction. Custom earplugs make that background chatter quieter, so it is easier to stay focused on your work.
Stay reachable or hear as little as possible
Concentration is mostly about voices. Speech sits mainly in the mid frequencies. That is why you see below how much each filter reduces the mid frequencies (M), with the SNR alongside.
Attenuation in the mid frequencies, where speech sits
Based on mid frequency values (M) from the acoustic specifications of Dynamic Ear Company, as on our filter page.
What suits your workplace?
With 9 dB SNR. Phones and background chatter become less sharp, and you can still hear the colleague next to you.
View Earplugs for the officeWith 16 dB SNR. Voices a few metres away become a lot quieter, so you are less likely to listen in.
View General useWith 19 dB SNR, for people who want to hear as little as possible. You still hear a drill, but less loudly.

Why voices are more distracting than other sounds
Not every sound is equally disruptive. In a study by Banbury and Berry (1998), participants did tasks such as memorising a text and mental arithmetic while they heard office noise. Office noise with speech disrupted both tasks. Office noise without speech only disrupted the arithmetic. It made no difference whether the conversations were about something meaningful.
So it is hard to tune out people talking around you. Earplugs do not take it away completely, but they make voices quieter and harder to understand at a distance. If you have ADHD and noise easily pulls you away from your work, also read earplugs for ADHD.
Stay reachable or quiet?
In the office you usually want to hear when someone says your name. A light filter like the DR 10 is enough for that. It mainly reduces high tones and lets most speech through. If you want to hear as little as possible, for example during an exam week or while writing, the DR 15 and DR 20 give you more calm.
Do not automatically choose the strongest filter. With a lot of attenuation you hear yourself relatively better, such as your voice, your breathing or your chewing. This is called the occlusion effect, and some people find it distracting. All values are on the filter page. The filter is interchangeable, so you can adjust it later.
Why your own voice sounds different and what helps is explained in the occlusion effect.
Earplugs for studying and exams
For studying, choose a filter of 16 or 19 dB SNR if you want to hear as little of your surroundings as possible. In the mid frequencies, where speech sits, these filters reduce sound by 13 and 17 dB according to the Dynamic Ear datasheet. Whispering, scraping chairs and conversations at the next table in the library or study room then become clearly quieter. If you study at home and still want to hear your housemates, 9 dB is often enough.
During a test or exam, your school or university decides whether earplugs are allowed. That differs per school, university of applied sciences and university. Ask the examination board well in advance, so you are not caught out on the day itself.
Wear your earplugs a few times while studying first. Then on exam day you are used to the feeling and to your own voice, which sounds different with earplugs in. Custom earplugs are ready about three weeks after your ear impressions are taken. So have your ear impressions taken in good time, well before the exam period.
Situations where earplugs help
- Library or study space. Whispering people, scraping chairs and keyboards.
- Working from home. Housemates, children, the washing machine or the neighbours.
- Open-plan office or hot desk. Phone calls and meetings at the desk next to you. Are you an employer? In custom earplugs for the office you can read how to equip a team.
- Train and café. Reading or working on the go. Also take a look at earplugs for travel.
If noise quickly overwhelms you, also read earplugs for sensory overload.
Comfortable to wear for hours
Concentrated work often lasts for hours. Foam earplugs put pressure on your ear canal because they expand in your ear. A custom earplug follows the shape of your ear canal and does not need to expand to seal. Choose silicone if you wear them for long periods and softness matters to you, and hard acrylic if you put them in and take them out often and want them easy to clean. More in acrylic or silicone, which should you choose?
Tips for a focused working day
- Use them in blocks. Put them in for a task of an hour or two and take them out during your break.
- Agree something with the people around you, for example that earplugs in means you do not want to be disturbed for a while.
- Keep them clean if you wear them every day. You can read how in cleaning custom earplugs.
Want to use them when travelling or at a concert too? Read how to choose one pair for several situations.

How to get earplugs for focus
You design online and have your ear impressions taken. Your earplugs are ready about three weeks after that. Handy to arrange before a busy study period.
Design
Choose the material, colour, filter and, if you like, a jewel or logo online. You see the price straight away and get a design code. For studying, a filter of 16 or 19 dB SNR is a good fit.
OnlineImpressions at the hearing centre
Take your design code to a partner hearing centre. The hearing care professional takes impressions of your ears. The ear impressions are included in the price and you pay at the hearing centre.
Ear impressions includedMade in our lab
Audiform in Kilder makes your earplugs from the impressions. They are ready about three weeks after your ear impressions are taken. You agree with your hearing care professional whether you collect them or have them sent to you.
About 3 weeksQuestions about earplugs for concentration
Will I still hear my colleagues with earplugs for the office?
Yes. The Earplugs for the office have a light filter of 9 dB SNR that mainly reduces high tones. If someone speaks to you, you will hear it.
Which level of protection is best for studying?
If you want to hear as little as possible, choose 16 dB (Earplugs for general use) or 19 dB with a DR 20. If you want to stay reachable, 9 dB is often enough.
Do voices go completely silent?
No. Earplugs with a filter make sound quieter, not silent. You still hear voices close by. Voices further away become harder to understand.
Are earplugs better than noise-cancelling headphones?
They are different. Noise cancelling works electronically and needs a battery. A custom earplug is small, light and works without power, even when you rest your head on your hand or a pillow.
Can I wear earplugs during an exam?
That is up to your school or university. Ask the examination board in advance.
