All about custom earplugs
Otoplastieken, custom earplugs and custom hearing protection are three names for the same thing. Here you can read what they are, what makes them better than universal earplugs and how to choose the right ones.
What are custom earplugs?
Custom earplugs (in Dutch otoplastieken) are earplugs made to measure from an impression of your ear. They follow the exact shape of your ear canal and outer ear, so they seal well and stay comfortably in place. Every custom earplug has an acoustic filter that determines how much sound is reduced.
At Audibling we make every custom earplug in our own Dutch lab, Audiform in Kilder, from hard acrylic or soft silicone. Our hearing protectors are PPE-3 hearing protection, compliant with EN 352.

Advantages over universal earplugs
- Fit and comfort. The earplug follows the shape of your ear, does not press anywhere and stays in place, even when you wear it for hours.
- The same protection every time. A universal earplug only protects well if you insert it exactly right. A custom earplug sits in the same place every time.
- Natural sound. Membrane filters attenuate more evenly than many ordinary earplugs, so speech and music stay clear instead of dull.
- Interchangeable filters. If you want a different level of protection, you only swap the filter. You do not need new earplugs.
- Durable. You use the same earplugs again and again, instead of new disposable ones each time.

Custom earplugs for every use
Every situation calls for a different level of protection. That is why we have custom earplugs for different uses, each with a suitable filter.
- Music and festivals for musicians and visitors who want to keep hearing the music clearly.
- Hearing protection for work, such as industry and construction and the food and pharmaceutical industry.
- Motorcycling, with less wind noise while you keep hearing the traffic.
- Sensory overload, for more calm in busy or noisy places.
- Hunting, shooting and heavy industry, with protection against loud peaks of noise.
- And also for the office, children, fireworks and general use.
How to choose a filter with the right attenuation
The filter determines how your custom earplugs sound and how much they reduce. We work with membrane filters from Dynamic Ear Company, in four series. There is DR for general use, DM for music and communication, DI for industry and production and DIM for impulse noise, such as gunshots and hammer blows.
The filters are interchangeable and fit in custom earplugs made of both silicone and hard acrylic. In the filter overview you can compare the series side by side.
How the four series sound and who they are meant for is explained in how the DR, DM, DI and DIM filters work.
Personalise with colour, logo or jewel
Hearing protection does not have to be boring. Choose your custom earplugs in clear, black, white, green, red or blue, or ask for a custom colour. You can also have them printed with a logo. Our logo print is patent pending. Your own logo is available from 10 pairs. For fewer pairs you get our standard logo. You can also have a jewel in silver, gold or rose gold set in them. A nice bonus is that you are less likely to lose an eye-catching earplug.

Ear impressions at a hearing centre or on site
Custom earplugs need an impression of your ear. You design your earplugs online and then have an impression taken at one of our partner hearing centres. The ear impressions are included in the price and you pay at the hearing centre. Companies with 10 or more employees can also have our specialists take ear impressions on site. After the ear impressions are taken, we make your custom earplugs in our lab. They are ready about three weeks later.
What do custom earplugs cost?
At Audibling you see in advance what you pay, including the ear impressions. You pay at the hearing centre. The price depends on the material (hard acrylic or silicone), the colour, the filter and any extras such as a logo print or jewel. In the Designlab you see the price of your design straight away. Frequently asked questions about custom earplugs
What is the difference between otoplastieken and custom earplugs?
There is no difference. Otoplastiek is the Dutch technical term for an earplug made to measure from an impression of your ear. At Audibling it has an interchangeable membrane filter that determines the attenuation.
How long does it take before my custom earplugs are ready?
After your ear impressions are taken, we make your custom earplugs in our own lab in the Netherlands. They are ready about three weeks later. The time until your appointment at the hearing centre comes on top of that. How to count back for a party or festival is explained in the delivery time of custom earplugs.
Can I choose a different level of protection later?
Yes. The filters are interchangeable, so for a different level of protection you only replace the filter. You do not need new earplugs.
Should I choose acrylic or silicone?
Acrylic is firm, durable and easy to clean, ideal for intensive use. Silicone is soft and flexible and gives extra comfort. Not sure? Ask a hearing care professional for advice.
Where do I have my ear impressions taken?
At one of our partner hearing centres. You can find a location on our hearing centre map. The ear impressions are included in the price and you pay at the hearing centre. For companies with 10 or more people, we also take ear impressions on site.
