Giving custom earplugs as a gift

You give custom earplugs as a gift with a design. You design the earplugs online and save the design as a PDF with a design code. You give that to the recipient. With it, the recipient books an appointment at a hearing centre in our network, where the hearing care professional takes impressions of the ears. The ear impressions are included in the price. You pay at the hearing centre. If you want to pay for the gift yourself, go to that appointment together. The earplugs are ready about three weeks after the ear impressions are taken.

A custom earplug is a personal gift in the literal sense, because it is made to fit the recipient's ear. That makes it a little different from a gift you simply wrap. In this article you can read how it works, what you choose in advance and which earplugs suit Sinterklaas, Christmas, an 18th birthday or a first festival.

How custom earplugs work as a gift

  1. Design the earplugs. In the Designlab you choose the material, colour, filter and, if you like, a logo or jewel. You see the design and the price straight away.
  2. Save the design. You get a design code and save the design as a PDF. You do not pay anything online.
  3. Give the gift. Pass on the PDF or the design code, for example in a card. Explain how it works.
  4. Go to the hearing centre together. With the design code, the recipient books an appointment with a hearing care professional via book an appointment. There, an ear impression is taken. The ear impressions are included in the price and you pay at the hearing centre. If you want to pay for the gift yourself, go along to the appointment. How the ear impressions are taken is explained in how is an ear impression made.
  5. Collect them or have them sent. The earplugs are ready about three weeks after the ear impressions are taken. They are made in our own lab, Audiform in Kilder. Whether the recipient collects them or has them sent is agreed with the hearing care professional.

Not sure about the design or which filter suits? Then ask your question via the contact page.

Arrange it in time for Sinterklaas and Christmas

The earplugs are ready about three weeks after the ear impressions are taken. With a gift, that time only starts once the recipient has been to the hearing centre. So what you need to arrange in time depends on exactly what you give.

  • You give the design. Then you can make the design until just before pakjesavond, the Sinterklaas gift evening, or Christmas. The recipient then books an appointment at the hearing centre and has the earplugs about three weeks after the ear impressions are taken.
  • You want the earplugs themselves to be ready. Then the recipient must have had their ear impressions taken at least three weeks in advance. For pakjesavond on 5 December, that is Saturday 14 November at the latest. If you give the presents on Christmas Eve, it is Thursday 3 December at the latest. This works best if it does not have to be a surprise, or if you plan the ear impressions together.

Do not plan the appointment at the hearing centre on the last day. You depend on a free slot in the diary, and with a few days to spare the gift is not ready just too late. How to count back for other dates is explained in how long it takes to make custom earplugs.

What do you choose without giving the surprise away?

You set a few things in the design. With these tips you choose well, even if you cannot ask the recipient directly.

Material

Hard acrylic is sturdy and easy to clean. Silicone is soft and flexible and is extra comfortable for long wear and sleeping. Read more in hard acrylic or silicone.

Filter

The filter determines what the earplugs are suitable for. Look at where the recipient is bothered by noise.

The recipient Filter Product
Sleeps badly because of snoring or traffic DR Earplugs for general use
Works in a busy open-plan office DR Earplugs for the office
Loves going to concerts and festivals DM Earplugs for music
Rides a motorcycle DM Earplugs for motorcycling
Hunts or shoots DIM Earplugs for hunting and shooting

According to the frequently asked questions on our product pages, the recipient can discuss higher or lower attenuation with the hearing care professional. Read more about the filters on our filter page and in how the DR, DM, DI and DIM filters work.

Gift ideas for each occasion

Sinterklaas

For children who quickly find things too busy at home or at parties, the earplugs for children are a gift that lasts a long time. Choose a cheerful colour such as red or blue and write a poem to go with it about the appointment at the hearing centre. With children, it is wise to have the fit checked regularly, see how long do custom earplugs last.

Christmas

Christmas is a good moment for something someone uses every day. Think of earplugs for better sleep, for travelling or for the office. Silicone is often the most comfortable choice for this.

18th birthday

People who turn 18 often go out more. Stichting Hoormij, the Dutch association for people with hearing loss, puts the safe limit at 80 dB for a maximum of 8 hours a day. In 2022, the Health Council of the Netherlands (Gezondheidsraad) advised lowering the maximum level of amplified music to 100 dB(A) and continuing to encourage hearing protection. Earplugs for music with a jewel, such as the Audibling Gold, then make a gift that stands out.

First festival

A first festival ticket goes well with earplugs for music. The DM filter reduces the music evenly, so everything still sounds clear. Give the gift well in advance, because the ear impressions and production together can easily take a few weeks. Also read custom festival earplugs and why music sounds muffled with ordinary earplugs.

Make it personal with colour, logo or jewel

  • Colour. You choose from six colours, which are clear, black, white, green, red and blue. A custom colour is possible by arrangement. For inspiration, see which colour earplug goes in which ear.
  • Logo. For individual customers, there is a choice of standard logos when you design your earplugs, such as Netherlands, Deer, Unicorn or Rainbow. Your own logo is available from 10 pairs, for example as a gift for a whole group of friends, a club or a team. Read more under logo print and custom earplugs with a logo.
  • Jewel. A jewel in silver, gold or rose gold turns the earplugs into an accessory. Ready-made designs are the Audibling Silver, Audibling Gold and Audibling Rose Gold, from €189.90.

Do you not know their favourite colour? Clear suits everyone and is barely noticeable.

Tips to make the gift land well

  • Explain in a few sentences that an appointment at the hearing centre is still needed and who pays there. That way the recipient knows what to expect.
  • Choose a moment well before the party, trip or festival the earplugs are meant for.
  • Mention that the earplugs come with a cord, clip and storage case.
  • Are you giving the gift to colleagues or a team of 10 or more people? Then we can also take the ear impressions on site. See Audibling Business.

All models are in the custom earplugs collection.

Frequently asked questions

Can I give custom earplugs without the recipient having to do anything?

No. Custom earplugs are made from an impression of the ear, so the recipient needs to have their ear impressions taken at a hearing centre. They do that with the design code or the PDF of the design.

Where do you pay for a gift?

At the hearing centre. You do not pay anything online for custom earplugs. The ear impressions are included in the price. If you want to pay for the gift yourself, go along to the appointment at the hearing centre.

How long does it take before the recipient has the earplugs?

The earplugs are ready about three weeks after the ear impressions are taken. Whether they are collected or sent is agreed between the recipient and the hearing care professional.

Can I have my own logo put on a gift?

Your own logo is available from 10 pairs. For fewer pairs, you choose a standard logo or a jewel when you design your earplugs.

Which earplugs do I choose if I do not know what they will be used for?

Then choose the earplugs for general use. They are meant for everyday life, on the go and at home.
