Custom-made earplugs (otoplastieken) are always made from an ear impression. A good impression is the basis for an earplug that seals well and is comfortable to wear. Many people feel nervous about having an ear impression taken, because they don't know what to expect. In this article, we explain step by step how the process works, what to keep in mind and why a good impression is so important.
At Audibling, a partner hearing care professional takes the impressions of your ears. The ear impressions are included in the price and you pay at the hearing centre.
1. Preparation
Before the impression is made, the specialist checks your ear with an otoscope. This is to see whether the ear canal is free of earwax, infections or other blockages. If the ear is not clean enough, it may need to be cleaned first. The impression is only made when the ear is clean and healthy.
2. Protecting the eardrum
To stop the impression material from touching the eardrum, the specialist places a small foam plug in the ear canal. This small foam block, called an otostop, makes sure the impression material reaches exactly the right depth without causing damage or discomfort.
3. Applying the impression material
Next, the specialist uses a syringe to fill the ear canal with a special silicone material that is suitable for medical use. This material fills both the ear canal and the outer ear. It often feels a little cold and can cause some pressure for a moment, but it does not hurt. After a few minutes, the material sets and you have an exact copy of the shape of your ear.
4. Removing the impression
After about five minutes, the material has set and the impression is carefully removed. The specialist checks the impression straight away to make sure it is complete and accurate. All the details of the ear canal and outer ear must be visible to make a custom earplug that fits well.
