If you are regularly exposed to noise at work, during DIY jobs, at festivals or behind the decks, you know how tiring and risky noise can be.

Hearing damage is irreversible and often creeps into your life slowly. Think of a constant ringing (tinnitus), difficulty following conversations in background noise or simply getting tired more quickly. Custom-made earplugs (otoplastieken) combine comfort, protection and ease of use.

In this article, you will read what makes custom earplugs different from universal earplugs, which filters there are and what to look for when buying and caring for them.

You have your ear impressions for Audibling custom earplugs taken at a partner hearing centre. The ear impressions are included in the price and you pay at the hearing centre.

What exactly are custom earplugs?

Custom earplugs are earplugs made to measure from an ear impression. A hearing care professional or specialist takes an accurate impression of your ear canal and outer ear. Based on that, a plastic (usually hard acrylic) or silicone earplug is produced that follows your anatomy exactly.

The result is a good seal without pressure points, with the option of inserting interchangeable filters that bring down the sound level without completely distorting how things sound.

The benefits of custom earplugs

Comfort and fit. Thanks to the exact fit, you can wear them for hours without irritation.
Reliable attenuation. The SNR value is predictable and reproducible.
Clear communication. With membrane filters or flat attenuating filters, speech stays clear and music sounds more natural.
Durable and hygienic. The material is easy to clean, and parts such as filters and acoustic channels can be maintained or replaced.
Lower costs in the long run. The purchase price is higher, but they need replacing less often and people wear them more consistently. Over several years, that makes them the cheaper option.

Custom earplugs versus universal earplugs

Universal earplugs are handy as an emergency solution, but they can twist, come loose or cause pressure, especially when worn for a long time. The attenuation also depends on how you insert them, so the actual protection is often lower than it says on the packaging. Custom earplugs, on the other hand, offer consistent attenuation because they stay firmly in place. That counts most in construction, industry, hospitality and music, where you often spend hours in loud noise.

Tube filters and membrane filters

Tube filters are mechanically simple and robust. In some versions, the high tones are reduced more than the low tones, which makes sound duller. Membrane filters reduce sound with a thin membrane, which lets the manufacturer control how much is reduced at each pitch. Audibling only works with interchangeable membrane filters. For continuous noise, you choose the DI membrane filter, which gives extra reduction of high tones. For music and hospitality, where speech and sound quality matter, the DM filter with attenuation that is as flat as possible is a good fit. The difference is explained in tube filters and membrane filters compared.

Hard acrylic or silicone?

Hard acrylic is sturdy and durable, has a smooth and hygienic surface and is easy to put in and take out. Silicone offers more wearing comfort, absorbs small movements of the ear canal and is pleasant for long use. The choice is personal and depends on your work environment, how long you wear them and any sensitivities.

Costs and payback

Custom earplugs cost more to buy. As a guide, they last about 4 to 5 years with normal use and good care. What that depends on is explained in how long custom earplugs last. Because they are comfortable, people also wear them more often. For employers, that means fewer risks, better compliance with the occupational health and safety rules and more satisfaction in the workplace.

What should you look for when buying custom earplugs?

1. Intake meeting and risk assessment.
2. Ear impressions taken by a specialist.
3. Trial wearing and checking the fit.
4. Documentation with the SNR and HML values.
5. Service and aftercare.
6. Hygiene and maintenance.
7. An annual fit check.
